Discussion:
Help with multinet:smtp_reject. file?

Hello,
In reading through the Multinet Installation and Admin guide, I
find information on writing an SMTP rejection file. I'm just not
exactly sure what kind of lines to put in for my requirements. Since I
am technically not part of a real domain, they seem relatively simple
to me:
1. I want to be able to send email from the local system to anywhere,
obviously. I'm not going to spam anyone.
2. I don't want anyone on the net to be able to send through me: just
the addresses on my local subnet and one or two others, from which
locations I'll often be connecting. (I have a Braille note taker which
can speak SMTP and POP3.)
3. I'd like ordb.org to no longer classify me as an open relay, because
it might prevent me from getting legitimate email.
I'm just not sure what kind of rules to put into the file. My subnet
is 192.168.0.0/24, and the only other address which should be allowed
to relay is one on the 198.236.40.* subnet--it changes somewhat.
That's my school's public network address, for the most part. I can
understand that I'll occasionally need to manually change this file...
A question: is it worth running PMDF just for the easier configuration?
I'm probably one of the only users of this system, aside from perhaps
a few friends who should have the same relaying rights as I.
Thanks in advance,
Zack.

Once you have accomplished "2." you have "3." as well.

! allow only your local hosts to send e-mail but force them to use your domain
*@your.domain.edu 192.168.*.* * n
! allow outside mail via your router but only mail directed to your domain
* 198.236.40.* *@your.domain.edu n
! now prevent the rest
* * * y "This is an unwanted attempt!"

Easy configuration? You need to work through two huge books before you even may
think about configuration.

To give a feel for that:

PMDF Installation Guide OpenVMS Edition - 208 pages
PMDF System Manager¹s Guide - 1664 pages
PMDF User¹s Guide OpenVMS Edition - 436 pages
