Anyone using Legato Networker for backups? We are getting poor
performance, and recommendations? OpenVMS 7.1-2 & 7.3, Multinet 4.3 &
4.4
Thanks
Jeff

The dreaded 7.3.2 (Jumbo Pack #7). We're a new install, but I had
pretty bad performance on our previous backup package (EDM), and I was
wonder if I could do anything to boost performance...

Well, the best thing you could probably do is go back to OpenVMS BACKUP,
SLS(retired) or ABS, the latter two using the BACKUP API. It's fast, reliable
and supported by the operating system's engineering people. It's based on ANSI
standards rather than proprietary specifications and also provides for
bare-metal restores, which NetWorker does not.

May I assume you're running the latest and greatest client/storage node software
- V6.0.1D?

There are some tweaks that need to be made to improve performance. These are
done by setting some logical nmaes at the system level. You'll find them in the
VMS Administrator's guide for NetWorker, though the doc. is fairly sketchy and
provides no details or suggestions for suitable values, which LNMs to use and/or
how to calculate suitable values. Try looking up the NSR$BLOCK_SIZE_devicename
LNM in the doc.'s. We're using a value of 63 which seems to work well enough.
