Trouble recognizing EWA0 controller

I have two ethernet adapters in a VAX 4700 running VMS 5.5-2H4.

One of them, EZA0, is a 10Mb/s half duplex adapter and is working.

The other shows up as EWA0, and appears to be 100Mb/s full duplex. I'd
like to run TCP/IP traffic over the faster EWA0 interface.

The system startup shows this:

VAX/VMS Version V5.5-2H4 Major version id = 1 Minor version id = 0

%STDRV-I-STARTUP, VMS startup begun at 27-APR-2007 21:59:46.76

I set up the controller in Multinet as se1:

(It's disabled right now because it wasn't working.)

I can't seem to get that interface to work. I've disabled se0 (and
enabled se1, of course) in order to force all traffic over EWA0, but the
system won't do anything with it. The network switch shows the port as
not connected. (Yes, it is physically connected.) From the console

When you added the ew device as se1, did you create a se1_configure.com
file in the root Multinet directory?

There is a se0_configure.com in Multinet_common_root:[Multinet.examples]
you can use as a template.

No, I did not. I just tried doing that (changing the "se0" in the
example file to "se1", as well as renaming the example). No effect,
unfortunately. It still doesn't work.

Is there anything I need to set up in VMS itself?

The question about using MULTINET:SE1_CONFIGURE.COM is due to MultiNet's
default action of setting the address that the interface uses to be the
address that DECnet would use.

Did you move the example file into the root Multinet dorectory? You need
to reboot after the change. Nothing is needed in VMS. If decent IV is
running, make sure that only 1 E device is present. Clear/purge the EZA0
circuit & line.

Yes, moved it to the root multinet directory, and I did reboot (I've never
been able to get TCP/IP related changes in Multinet to take effect without
a reboot). I do see the custom configure's output message on the console
during startup, so it definitely is running.

I am running Decnet phase IV. I see the following two circuits/lines:

NCP>sho know line char
Known Line Volatile Characteristics as of 30-APR-2007 14:10:06
Line = ISA-0
Receive buffers = 10
Controller = normal
Protocol = Ethernet
Service timer = 4000
Hardware address = 08-00-2B-9D-AA-FE
Device buffer size = 1498

Line = TCP-0-1
No information available

NCP>sho know cir char
Known Circuit Volatile Characteristics as of 30-APR-2007 14:12:55
Circuit = ISA-0
State = on
Service = disabled
Cost = 4
Maximum routers allowed = 33
Router priority = 64
Hello timer = 15
Type = Ethernet

Circuit = TCP-0-1
State = on
Substate = -starting
Service = enabled
Cost = 1
Hello timer = 300
Verification = disabled

As I understand it, ISA-0 is the normal DECNET circuit on the eithernet
controller, and TCP-0-1 is, I believe, a non-functioning DECNET-over-IP
circuit to another system. I have no idea why that's in there.

If I understand what you're saying, you want me to clear/purge ISA-0?

No, I did not. I just tried doing that (changing the "se0" in the
example file to "se1", as well as renaming the example). No effect,
unfortunately. It still doesn't work.

Is there anything I need to set up in VMS itself?

Subject: Trouble recognizing EWA0 controller

I have two ethernet adapters in a VAX 4700 running VMS 5.5-2H4.

One of them, EZA0, is a 10Mb/s half duplex adapter and is working.

The other shows up as EWA0, and appears to be 100Mb/s full duplex. I'd
like to run TCP/IP traffic over the faster EWA0 interface.

The system startup shows this:

(It's disabled right now because it wasn't working.)

I can't seem to get that interface to work. I've disabled se0 (and

system won't do anything with it. The network switch shows the port as

I don't know the brand of card you are using, but we have a similar card
we purchased from Nemonix, Inc. that adds Fast Ethernet, and a Ultra Wide
SCSI adapter. They are working fine. The Fast Ethernet adaptor shows up
as EWA0. The driver loads from syconfig.com, so you don't see the ports
at the ">>> show device". Our systems are VAX 4105's. We are using
5.5-2h4. We have EWA0 configured for SE0 and EZA0 on SE1. The only
problems we have had is making sure the boards are making good connections
in the socket because of the tight fit in the 4105 chassis.

One of our hardware guys thought we had put a Nemonix card in another of
the VAXes at some point, but wasn't sure what was in this one. It's
suppose it's likely it's also a Nemonix card. I don't see anything in
syconfig, however. Perhaps that's the problem!

$ ty sys$manager:syconfig.com
$! This is an empty site-specific device configuration procedure.
$! If you have specific device configuration requirements at your
$! site, you should place the required commands in this procedure.
$!
$ SET NOON
$ SYSGEN := MCR SYSGEN
$ SYSGEN CONNECT FYA0/NOADAPTER
$ EXIT

What should be in that file? I'm wondering if I even have the driver
software on the machine.

RE: Trouble recognizing EWA0 controller

No, I did not. I just tried doing that (changing the "se0" in the

unfortunately. It still doesn't work.

Is there anything I need to set up in VMS itself?

RE: Trouble recognizing EWA0 controller

When you added the ew device as se1, did you create a se1_configure.com
file in the root Multinet directory?
There is a se0_configure.com in Multinet_common_root:[Multinet.examples]
you can use as a template.

I'd like to run TCP/IP traffic over the faster EWA0 interface.

The system startup shows this:

VAX/VMS Version V5.5-2H4 Major version id = 1 Minor version id = 0

%STDRV-I-STARTUP, VMS startup begun at 27-APR-2007 21:59:46.76
Media Type is `100f' (Ethernet link speed is 100 Mbps, full duplex)
Clustering over Ethernet interface is disabled
PCI Device: Digital 21140A Fast Ethernet Chip
Loading EWDRIVER.EXE, connecting as EWA0
%EWA0, FastFD(Full Duplex 100baseTX) mode set by console
Ethernet Station Address is 00-06-2b-00-00-2b
Clustering inactive on EWA0

I set up the controller in Multinet as se1:

MultiNet Network Configuration Utility V4.4(104)
[Reading in MAXIMUM configuration from MULTINET:MULTINET.EXE]
[Reading in configuration from MULTINET:NETWORK_DEVICES.CONFIGURATION]
NET-CONFIG>show
Interface Adapter CSR Address
Flags/Vector

-NONE-
[TCP/IP: 172.17.26.82, IP-SubNet: 255.255.255.0]
[VMS Device: EZA0, Link Level: Ethernet]
*se1 (Shared VMS Ethernet/FDDI) -NONE- -NONE-
-NONE-
[TCP/IP: 172.17.26.92, IP-SubNet: 255.255.255.0]
[VMS Device: EWA0, Link Level: Ethernet]

(It's disabled right now because it wasn't working.)

I can't seem to get that interface to work. I've disabled se0 (and
enabled se1, of course) in order to force all traffic over EWA0, but the
system won't do anything with it. The network switch shows the port as
not connected. (Yes, it is physically connected.) From the console
show config

Scan of main memory

SCSI Adapter 0 (761300), SCSI ID 7

-EZA0 (08-00-2B-9D-AA-FE)

I don't know if I'm missing a vital step somewhere, or if something is
broken or misconfigured. Anyone have any ideas?

The switch IS set to 100/full -- that's the reason we're doing all of
this. I want to get rid of anything that's 10 or half, and elliminate
auto negotiations.

The lack of a MAC address makes me think the card is not working right. It
looks like I have a spare card in a decommissioned machine. I'll give
that a shot either tomorrow or tonight.

RE: Trouble recognizing EWA0 controller

OK lets get back to basics. I highlighted in RED a statement you made when
you sent your first email.

If the switch doesn't show it as connected then NOTHING you do in DECnet
or Multinet is going to make it work.

Is the switch set to auto negotiate? Can someone there make sure that the
port it is connected to is running 100 full duplex? That is what the
Nemonix commands are setting it to (IF your commands are the same as what
were earlier documented).

I've got that in there. I made a mistake earlier when I said sysconfig
was empty; I was looking at the wrong system. This system has the proper
commands in there to start up the driver for the controller, including the
logical definition you mention.
